    Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

    (a) whether China is undertaking developmental projects in our neighbouring countries particularly in Nepal;
    (b) if so, the details of the projects which the Chinese have taken up in our neighbourhood;
    (c) whether the Government proposes to counter Chinese influence in our neighbourhood, particularly Nepal, keeping national security in view; and
    (d) if so, the details thereof?

    ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI E. AHAMED)

    (a) to (d) Government is aware of China’s enhanced economic and technological capabilities in execution of developmental projects in developing countries. Chinese involvement in construction projects such as power plants, ports, roads and railways in Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka is also known. Government accords highest priority to India’s relations with neighbouring countries. India is an active development partner of its neighbours and is involved in various projects in these countries including Border Infrastructure Project in Nepal, Akhaura-Agartala Rail Link Project in Bangladesh, Housing project in Sri Lanka, Kaladan Transit and Transport project in Myanmar and Information Technology Project in Maldives.
