International Interactions

The Institute holds periodic bilateral dialogues with similar institutions and organisations from various parts of the world. Dialogues with each such institution is held on a mutually agreed upon set of topics in each country alternately. Scholars from each side present papers to set the tone for the discussions, and the proceedings of these interactions are, in some instances, published.

IDSA has held bilateral dialogues with the following institutions:

Interaction With Norwegian Parliamentary Delegation

A delegation of the International Committee of the Labour Party of Norway visited IDSA on September 10, 2008. The visiting delegation was headed by Mr. Olav Akselsen, Member and Speaker of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Parliament of Norway.

Interaction With Singapore Command And Staff College Delegation

IDSA hosted the Singapore Command and Staff College delegation, under the 'Distinguished Speakers Programme' on 18 August 2008. The visiting delegation, comprising of nine faculty and 65 student officers, was led by Brigadier General Jimmy Tan, the Commandant of SAFTI Military Institute.

Roundtable with visiting delegation from the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS)

Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Edward P Smith, Director, APCSS visited IDSA on March 18, 2008. He was accompanied by Lt. Col. John Gasner, APCSS Chief, Outreach, and Lt. Col. Brian Hedrick, Deputy Chief, Office of Defence Co-operation, US Embassy, New Delhi.

IDSA-PRIO Institutional Cooperation

IDSA has established a programme of joint research and institutional co-operation with the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO). The objective is the development of new knowledge and expertise on topics of mutual interest within the broad field of security studies.

IDSA-BESA Bilateral Dialogue 2008

As part of its ongoing efforts to bring together experts on security issues of mutual interest, IDSA and the BESA Center for Strategic Studies, Israel, held a two-day Bilateral Dialogue on “Non-State Armed Groups and Asian Security in the 21st Century” at IDSA on January 15-16, 2008.

IDSA-NCCU Bilateral Round Table Conference (December 7-8, 2005)

IDSA hosted and organised this latest round of the dialogue at India International Centre, New Delhi. Topics discussed during the course of the two-day dialogue were: Security Perspectives of India and Taiwan; Non-Traditional Security Challenges like Bird Flu and the Threat of Piracy; Military Modernisation; Japan's Role in Asia; and India-Taiwan Ties. The dialogue began with a keynote address by the IDSA Director Mr. Narendra Sisodia on Indian Security Concerns.

The six-member NCCU team was led by Dr. Bih-Jaw Lin, Vice President of the National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and included: Dr. Peter Chang (Department of Health, Taiwan), Mr. James H C Chang (TECC, New Delhi), Mr. Leon Lee (First Secretary, TECC, New Delhi), Dr. Fu-Kuo Liu (Associate Research Fellow, NCCU) and Dr. Han Hua Chen (Associate Research Fellow, NCCU).

Mr. Narendra Sisodia, Director IDSA, led the ten-member Indian team, which comprised of: Dr. V Siddhartha, Dr. G V C Naidu, Col. Rakesh Sharma, Wg. Cdr. Rajiv Mata, Cdr. Alok Bansal, Cdr. Gurpreet Khurana, Mr. Deba Mohanty, Dr. Cherian Samuel, Ms. Vaishali Singh.

IDSA-BESA Bilateral Round Table (September 20-21, 2005)

This latest round of bilateral discussions was held in New Delhi. The first day of discussions focused upon Indian and Israeli perspectives on security, the situation in West Asia and its global impact, and on the threat of terrorism faced by the two countries. Day Two was devoted to bisecting, analysing and prognosticating about India-Israel cooperation.

The BESA team was led by its director Prof. Efraim Inbar and included Dr. Avi Kober and Dr. Ze'ev Maghen.

Mr. Narendra Sisodia led the IDSA team, which included: Dr. P R Kumaraswamy of Jawaharlal Nehru University; and Col. Basant Repswal and Dr. S Kalyanaraman.

IDSA-JIIA Bilateral Round Table (March 14-15, 2005)

IDSA also hosted a team of experts from the Japan Institute for International Affairs in 2005 for a bilateral round table. The two-day interaction spread over six sessions focused upon Southeast Asian Security Issues, Nuclear Issues and Prospects for Arms Control in the Asia Pacific, the Rise of China, Economic Relations between India and Japan, Indian and Japanese Perceptions on the Global and Regional Strategic Environment, and Multilateral Institutions including UN Reforms.

Members of the JIIA team included Prof. Yumi Hiwatari of Sophia University, Maj. Gen. Noboru Yamaguchi, Director for Research at the Ground Research and Development Command of the JGSDF, Prof. Ryo Asano of Doshisha University, Mr. Takashi Shimada, President of the India Business Centre at Tokyo, Mr. Yukio Okamota, President of Okamota Associates, and Mr. Toshiya Hoshino, Visiting Research Fellow at JIIA.

The IDSA presentations were made by: Cmde. C Uday Bhaskar, Dr. Ram Upendra Das, Fellow at RIS, Dr. G V C Naidu, Dr. Arpita Mathur, Dr. Raviprasad Narayanan and Dr. Rajesh Mishra.
