  • According to reports, the EU High Representative Catherine Ashton stressed on the importance to facilitate a process that will lead to political reconciliation and democratic elections is agreed at the earliest in Maldives.1

    Meanwhile, according to reports, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed departed to Sri Lanka on March 22, 2012 on a mission to give information to the international community on “how the Maldives government was changed in a coup” on February 7. This is Nasheed’s first trip abroad since his controversial resignation, which the party claims was forced in an opposition backed coup that was aided by rogue security forces.2

    In another development, reports noted that the Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is to hold meetings with the Indian High Commission in response to reports that Television Maldives (TVM), the Maldivian state broadcaster, has been labelled a threat to Indian national security on the website indiantelevision.com. According to the website in question, the issue has been filed with the Indian Parliament and relates to the content broadcast on TVM. TVM Chief Executive Mohamed “Mondhu” Asif has denied that the channel broadcasts content that could harm Indian security. It has been alleged that 24 other TV stations were receiving similar treatment from the Indian government.3

    In other developments, reports noted that United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has renewed the mandate of Dr Ahmed Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, for another year.4
