    UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.6374
    TO BE ANSWERED ON 05.05.2010

    DR. PADMASINHA BAJIRAO PATIL

    Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

    (a) whether it is fact that India is engaging itself to develop alternate energy transit sources and routes in Afghanistan;
    (b) if so, the details thereof ;
    (c) whether the government is consulting some other countries in this regard; and
    (d) if so, the details thereof?

    ANSWER THE MINISTER OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI S. M. KRISHNA)

    (a) to (d) The only energy transit route through Afghanistan under consideration is the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) route for which negotiations are ongoing. India became a formal member of the proposed TAPI pipeline project during the 10th Steering Committee Meeting in the 3rd and 4th Technical working Group meetings in Ashgabat. The next round of Steering Committee and Technical Working Group meetings, being coordinated by the Asian Development Bank, is expected to be held shortly.
