  • According to reports, British government is in early talks with Bahrain over a potential order for the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter. King Hamad al-Khalifa of Egypt, met with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London last week for talks on a range of regional and other issues, including Bahrain’s plans for a modernization of its armed forces. Any sale of weapons to the Bahraini government is likely to be highly controversial against a backdrop of continued suppression of political reform in Bahrain. Eurofighter consortium member BAE Systems is leading the industrial effort to sell the Typhoon in the gulf region. The combat jet has already been purchased by Oman and Saudi Arabia. Bahrain was not among a list of Middle East sales prospects for Typhoon mentioned by BAE. 1
In another development, according to reports, US President Barack Obama has said that he will not seek any significant reforms to the controversial phone and email surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency. While, saying that appropriate surveillance reforms will be carried out, the president stressed that there is a need to strike right balance between national security and individual’s freedom. Obama outlined four specific steps that his administration would take shortly in order to tweak the system and instill a sense of confidence in the American people. 2
