  • The meeting scheduled between the chief of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, Gholamreza Aghazadeh and the Director-General of the IAEA, Mohammed ElBaradei was postponed. No reasons were however given for the postponement1.

In other developments, the Democratic presidential candidates expressed their strong views on Iran. Hillary Clinton termed President Bush's Iran policy "a loser" and recommended low-level talks with the country that the United States has labeled as a sponsor of terrorism. Barack Obama on the other hand stated that keeping Iran free of nuclear weapons would be one of his top priorities if elected as the President2.

Meanwhile, talks in Shanghai aimed at persuading Iran to stop its nuclear program ended with no clear result, though the meeting's chairman, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister He Yafei stated that diplomatic efforts would continue. The meeting, attended by the five permanent U.N. Security Council members as well as Germany and the European Union, however managed to “reach an agreement on some major parts” of the issue3.
