The Pentagon stated that more than 10 per cent of the over 500 Guantanamo inmates released so far have returned to indulge in terrorist activities. For instance, Mullah Abdullah Zakir who was held in Guantanamo until December 2007 was handed over to the Afghans and later released. Sources told the BBC that he led the fight against British forces stationed in Helmand province and UK government officials have also confirmed he was now closely involved in planning attacks on British and other NATO forces in Afghanistan and was operating with impunity from the Pakistani city of Quetta1.
