  • With the first-ever multi party presidential elections setting up the tempo in Maldives, the Election Commission has announced that around 85.45 per cent Maldivians turned out for elections on October 81. As no candidate has received more than 50 per cent of votes, a second round of election would be held on October 292. President Mohammad Abdul Gayoom and Mohammad Nasheed have emerged as the two lead candidates. While Gayoom received a total of 71,731 votes, Nasheed is placed second with 44,293 votes.

Meanwhile, Nasheed has declared that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured the support of other opposition candidates in the Presidential race. Dr Hasan Saeed, who is an independent candidate and Ibrahim Ismail of the Social Liberal Party (SLP) have offered unconditional backing to MDP 3.
