As Rising Asian Powers India and China Need to Work Together

April 01, 2013

New Delhi: A track II bilateral dialogue was held amongst scholars from India and China at IDSA, New Delhi on April 1, 2013. This is part of the regular interaction between the two premiere think-tanks from India and China— Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), New Delhi, and the China Institute for Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), based in Beijing, China. The Indian delegation was headed by Director General of IDSA, Dr Arvind Gupta and the Chinese delegation was led by Dr Yang Mingjie, Vice President of CICIR.

During the course of the dialogue the scholars exchanged views on a range of issues pertaining to regional and global security environment, state of Sino-Pak relations, boundary and water related issues and prospects of bilateral engagement in future. The Chinese scholars felt that Sino-Indian relations had become stable despite the unresolved issues, which offered a new paradigm for inter-state relationship in today’s world.

The participants in the dialogue agreed that the existing geopolitical environment offered excellent opportunities for cooperation for both the countries. The two countries could enhance their cooperation in areas related to global governance, economic development and addressing the issues related to global economic crisis. Importance of military-to-military cooperation was also emphasized. It was argued that as two rising Asian economies, the two countries needed to take adequate care to address each other’s concerns and sustain multi-track dialogue to further strengthen bilateral relationship.
