The First World War (1914–18) was a momentous event in world history. It also left a deep impact on India, which was then under the British rule. As the world celebrates the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war, it is worthwhile to reflect on the Indian contribution to British was effort, and how the war affected Indian political, military and economic evolution. We must also remember that the period 1914–18 was witness to a renewed dynamism in the Indian National Movement, beginning with the return of M.K. Gandhi to India from South Africa.
