Grenade fired at Civil Secretariat in Srinagar; Former Hizb-e-Islami (HeI) commander arrested

    According to reports, panic gripped Civil Secretariat on July 18, 2012 when militants fired a rifle grenade towards the building. However the grenade didn’t explode. The incident created panic in the area. The security personnel posted at the Secretariat gate were seen taking combat positions. Police and Central Reserve Police Force later carried out search operations in the adjoining areas. .1

    In another development, reports noted that a former district commander of the Hizb-e-Islami (HeI) outfit, his wife and their three children were arrested in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir after they returned from Pakistan via Nepal. Sarfaraz Ahmed, his wife Shaheen Akhtar and their children were taken into custody by a police team. Sarfaraz, who belonged to Surankote belt of the district, had crossed over to PaK via the LoC in 1999 for arms training and came back to India in 2000. He operated as a HeI commander in Poonch and Rajouri belts for 3 years. .2
