  • Thirty police personnel, including a Superintendent of Police (SP), were killed in three attacks by Maoist guerillas in and around Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh on July 12. The attacks occurred in one of the most remote Maoist-hit areas where the communication network is dismally poor.

In the first incident, unidentified guerillas killed two policemen in the morning of July 12. The second incident occurred when Rajnandgaon SP Vinod Kumar Choubey was heading for Madanwada, where Maoist guerillas triggered a powerful landmine blast and followed it up with indiscriminate firing killing Mr. Choubey and 23 policemen. Four more personnel were killed as rebels ambushed another team of security men heading to Madanwada by a different route1.
