  • Veteran Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano was elected as the new director-general of the IAEA in a closely contested election. Mr. Amano was widely perceived as a candidate being supported by the developed world. India had initially supported Amano’s rival for the post, South Africa's Abdul Samad Minty. Reports noted that Amano strongly supports nuclear disarmament and had also expressed his support to help build nuclear power infrastructure in developing countries1.
